  • Chris Black @ 191 Toole
    19:00 -22:00
    Sep-Fri-2017

    ChrisBlack-PressPhot-Credit-Shelly-Black
Chris Black, former heartbroken country singer and gypsy/cumbia violinist, is set to release a new album of chamber music.
Lullabies and Nightmare is a collection of music written for the alt-classical concert series ChamberLab, composed by Chris Black, and recorded by Gabriel Sullivan (XIXA). Since founding ChamberLab in 2010 as an outlet for bandmates with a composedly bent, working with classical violinists, cellists, flautists, bassoonists, and oboists has become the new normal for the former tear-jerking front man of the Red Room’s “Ashes of Love” country music “unhappy hour,” and the freewheeling fiddle player of Sullivan’s gypsy/cumbia superband Taraf de Tucson.
Lullabies and Nightmares opens with “‘Dance’ from Barfly,” a violin and cello duet set over a pounding, percussive double bass line, originally inspired by the paintings of Tucson local Joe Pagac, and continues to cut a wide swath through various duo and trio combinations of strings and woodwinds, including a duet for double bass and contrabassoon (perhaps a first for such a combo). Other music recorded during the sessions includes “Downtown Suite,” a double reed duet inspired by scenes from Tucson’s changing downtown (titles include “The Grill After the Fire” and “Girl Can’t Walk in Those Shoes”) and a narrated string trio called “Cooper Must Die.”
The concert will feature the original recording ensembles in a completely acoustic concert at the Screening Room, site of the very first ChamberLab concert in 2010. Performers include members of the Tucson Symphony Orchestra and the Grammy Award-winning True Concord Voices and Orchestra.
The musicians (on the CD and for the show, both):
    Mindi Acosta, flute
    Cassandra Bendickson, bassoon
    Chris Black, double bass, narration
    Samantha Bounkeua, violin
    Jessica Campbell, bassoon, contrabassoon
    Cat Cantrell, oboe, English horn
    Anne Gratz, cello
    Daniel Hursey, bassoon

    kiko-band-shot-small-e1504831296904

For longtime Tucsonans, the Jacome name may well bring up memories of one of Tucson’s oldest and most established families. Think about the old Jacome Department Store or downtown’s Jacome Plaza, the site of Pima County’s Main Public Library.  And while Kiko Jacome is extremely proud of that side of his family tree, he is also a Ronstadt, nephew to the late Michael J. and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Linda, and is one of many Ronstadt cousins firmly embedded in what some family members like to refer to as the “family business.”
