  • The Midnight Stroll
    20:00 -22:00
    Nov-Wed-2017

    05-og

If Joy Division had an emotive range that extended beyond despair and melancholy they may have sounded a little bit like the Midnight Stroll. Dark-hued, but not entirely gloomy, it may be more fair to speak of the Austin duo in the context of other 80’s UK bands like the Jesus and the Mary Chain and the Wake–with a little bit of whirling guitar wails of early Cocteau Twins sprinkled on top. Listen to the first moments of their new record Heartbreak Bugaloo and you’ll hear what I’m talking about. Reverbed percussion and a thick bass line move like molasses beneath a longing synthesizer and a soaring electric guitar in the opening breath of the Midnight Stroll’s debut LP. But don’t get comfortable, as soon as the song harks back to some 80’s gothic shadows, Aaron Behren’s extravagantly flamboyant vocals descend into the mix–it’s about as far as one can get from the cool monotone that many of those UK vocalists preferred. There’s really is no neat comparison to Behren’s vocal style, but the only time on the record when one can safely liken his voice to another’s is on “Losing My Mind” where he, appropriately, sounds like a manic Robert Smith.

Behren’s magnetic histrionics may seem like it’d be the main ingredient to the group’s exciting sound, but it’s Jonas Wilson who concocts the universe that Behren thrives within. While Wilson often summons the colors of the darker side of post-punk, he brews a sound of his own through his intricate production, and furthermore, there are many moments of their new record that dive into soundscapes that some of his progenitors would have never considered. Definitely keep your ears open for this Austin two-piece, they’re bringing something special to airwaves.

    Nov-Wed-2017

    09-og

Los Angeles’s prodigal songwriting son Ariel Pink shares his eleventh studio album, Dedicated to Bobby Jameson, September 15.

The album’s title makes a direct and heartfelt reference to a real-life L.A. musician, long presumed dead, who resurfaced online in 2007 after 35 reclusive years to pen his autobiography and tragic life story in a series of blogs and YouTube tirades. “His book and life resonated with me to such a degree,” Pink states, “that I felt a need to dedicate my latest record to him.”

  • Mild High Club
    19:00 -22:00
    Nov-Thu-2017

    44-og
Chicago born and bred Alexander Brettin is the man behind the Mild High Club moniker. After relocating to Los Angeles in 2012, his demos caught the ears of some local musicians and labels, eventually finding their way to Stones Throws’ Peanut Butter Wolf. After signing with Stones Throw, Mild High Club released their debut LP in September 2015, which Pitchfork described as Dza record full of psychedelic soft rock that draws strongly from White-album era Beatles and T-Rex, with swirls of ’80s-indebted synthpop.dzThe band quickly became a preferred supporting act on the road, touring with King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard, Allah-las, Quilt, Youth Lagoon, Wire, and appearing at festivals near and wide, their live act described as Dzhypnotizing and etherealdz. The release of 2016’s Skiptracing was a major step forward for the band, which Aquarium Drunkard described as a Dzcool, grooving blend of lo-fi psych, lounge, and exoticadz, a thematic, psychedelic jazz-pop odyssey whose story arc follows a private investigator attempting to trace the steps of the sound and the spirit of American music.

  • April Verch Band w/ Matt & Bekah Rolland
    18:00 -21:00
    Nov-Sun-2017

    1_april_verch_lied_center_NE.jpg.crop_display

Fiddler, singer, and stepdancer April Verch knows how relevant an old tune can be. She was raised surrounded by living, breathing roots music—her father’s country band rehearsing; the lively music at church and at community dances; the tunes she rocked out to win fiddle competitions. She thought every little girl learned to stepdance at the age of three and fiddle at the age of six. She knew nothing else and decided early on that she wanted to be a professional musician.

Matt & Bekah Rolland of Tucson bluegrass staple Run Boy Run will be opening the show.

  • A Winter’s Evening with Ryanhood
    18:30 -22:00
    Nov-Fri-2017

    AA029-XL

An intimate evening of storytelling and songs celebrating the release of Ryanhood’s first holiday album.

Named ‘Best Group/Duo’ in the 2014 International Acoustic Music Awards, acoustic-duo Ryanhood got their first break more than a decade ago as street-performers at Boston’s Quincy Market. It was there that they were spotted by a college booking agent and thrust into the college touring scene, where Campus Activities Magazine would name them “one of the most requested acts by college buyers all across the country.” They’ve since gone on to perform more than 800 shows in 45 U.S. states over the past decade and have shared stages with Jason Mraz, Matt Nathanson, Train, and many more.

Cameron Hood’s rich and folky lead vocals, Ryan Green’s explosive guitar and mandolin riffs, and their airtight vocal harmonies prompted the Arizona Daily Star to call them, “a match made in radio heaven.”

  • Flobots
    20:00 -22:00
    Nov-Wed-2017

    97-og

When a pair of intelligent, visionary emcees joins forces with a battle-hardened, groove-fusing rhythm section, and a classically trained violist the result is a sound that explores and expands the frontiers of live hip-hop. Progressive in both style and message, the band’s ability to drop from symphonic rock-infused crescendos into stripped-down string-laden breakbeats has earned Flobots a reputation for both originality and authenticity.

Armed with musicianship, intelligence, and an ingrained sense of rebellion, Flobots are looking to engage a new musical culture, one mind at a time.

If you are thinking, you are winning.
